Day #3

Yesterday remained heavily overcast and cool, but we had no rain. We toured the one bathhouse which is now a museum, and later explored the beautiful mountain roads immediately behind the main city area.

The bathhouse was a real eye-opener! Small photo above shows steam from one of several decoative hot water fountains outside the bathhouse, fed by the hot springs beneath.

The scale and scope of the bathhouse enterprise, back in the early 1900s must have been enormous. In the museum, which is preserved just as was, row upon row of straighforward bathing cubicles filled one floor, with water piped directly from the hot springs beneath the city. In addition there were facilities and equipment for specialised treatments, massage, steam baths, heat treatments. Male and female areas were strictly separate, the males' area being considerably more ornate, larger and better equipped than the female's section. Herrrumph!

Bearing in mind that the building we explored is just one of many in the city, it's amazing to realise the number of people partaking of this luxury, and supposed remedy for many ills, in the recent past.

Some of the equipment looked decidedly creepy, almost torture-like.

The next photos are from Fordyce Bathhouse, now a museum.
The area reserved for relaxing, socialising, and no doubt networking, after the exertions of bathing and massage.

The line for waterboarding forms on the right dear!

Some plumbing!

You have been warned!

A small cascading spring on the hillside behind the town. The temperature of the water as it emerges is 140*

Forest surrounds the city

The weather will dictate which way and how far we travel today. Storms are forecast -again, it stormed briefly and rained overnight. We'll see how the driver feels when he wakes, and what TV's weather channel has to offer.
